BOOKS:

THE SKS CARBINE by Steve Kehaya and Joe Poyer (North Cape Publications $16.95) -    This book features some outstanding information regarding SKS history, types, identification, and disassembly.  80% of this book is a part by part technical manual and I especially appreciate the troubleshooting and repair guide found in the appendices.   Since this is a technical manual, the description of each and every single part in the rifle is extremely detailed, yet not detailed enough for a person to draw blueprints from the descriptions.  Reading this information is about as exciting as reading a phone book.  There are nuggets of valuable information that is hidden in this text, but finding it is tedious.  The first 17 pages and the last  60 pages of this text make the book.  The illustrations are outstanding as you will discover a good portion of armory mark illustrations found on the web and elsewhere are scanned directly from this book.  If a technical manual is what you're after, this book is unsurpassed.

THE SKS TYPE 45 CARBINES by Duncan Long (Desert Publications $16.95)  The practical approach to SKS ownership.  If history is a story, Mr. Long is one hell of a story teller.  I've yet to read a more entertaining history of the SKS's development and contention with the other rifles of the period.  The book does a wonderful job of bringing the SKS to you as a rifle destined for modifications.   The main thrust of this book being accessories, one can expect to find much information regarding stocks, magazines, suppressors, ammo, and bipods.  Since the information in this publication is quite dated (1992), so don't expect to see the items still produced since '92 selling for the price he is quoting.  Although there is information regarding take down and nomenclature, this book is not much of a technical manual.  This book and the above listed book compliment each other nicely as a pair.

CD'S:  Commonly found online in such places as eBay.

SKS INTERACTIVE MANUAL by Jabinya (was approx $10 but no longer sold):  A well produced browser based manual containing some basic, yet important,  information about the SKS.  There are a few Quicktime video's of a few guys shooting holes in things like Kevlar vests and pumpkins, but the best and most plentiful video's are the ones regarding disassembly.  There's a quick video for every step of the way.  To a newbie this can be invaluable information, but experienced SKS owners will find nothing really new and may even disagree with a few of their techniques.  (They clean the barrel from the muzzle end and dry firing the rifle after assembly is the final step in assembly)  Hidden on the CD is also a detailed diagram and instructions for modifying the SKS to be fully automatic.  (Need a refresher on the legal ramifications of owning this information?)

SKS "INFO ON CD" by SleuthSlayer (approx $10):  This is a collection of public domain information regarding SKS's.  This information includes:  fully automatic, two shot, and drop in sear modifications for the trigger assembly, AK-47 magazine conversion, SKS blueprints (NOT BLUEPRINTS at all, but blown up diagrams), and three owners manuals including the Dept. of the Army manual.  I don't even have to mention how illegal it would be for most of us to own this garbage is, do I?  The production value is nonexistant, scans are rotten, and it's all ripped off information.  You know those crumby SKS manuals that sell for $5.00 at gun shows with the blue cover?  It's here.  There's even a section regarding stock replacements, but once read it turns out it's the instruction manual that comes with ATI MONTE CARLO STOCKS!!!  I laughed out loud when I saw it!  Anyway, if someone wants to buy all the marginal manuals and illegal modification information, this CD is quite a value at $10 because it consolidates about $50 of information neatly in one easily discarded CD.

VIDEOS:

AGI GUNSMITHING:  The American Gunsmithing Institute makes instructional videos for pretty much every type of rifle in existance.  Their videos are usually outstanding, and the SKS video is no exception.  You will learn how to strip and clean the rifle, the history of the rifle, and pretty much everything in between.  The tapes are a little more expensive than other tapes, but the production value of this video make it worth the added expense.
